Watching the “News”

I almost never watch television these days. But I do love tennis, and with the U.S. Open going on, I watched a good twenty hours of ‘the tube’ this three-day, holiday weekend. Unfortunately, that led to the unfortunate mistake of watching the shit after tennis went off the air. I don’t know if other countries have this, but in America we have ‘news’ shows that really aren’t about the news; they are in the sense that they discuss facts, things that actually happened (usually), but that focus more on stories intended to shock or numb you, instead of about important political, economical, or social issues.

I accidentally watched an hour of these shows last night, reminding me of why I don’t watch much television. And why I try to stay away from acid.

Opportunities for Independent Game Developers

Gamasutra has a short article up today about a new initiative to fund small game development studios, lead by Joystick Labs, which defines itself as a “seed-stage accelerator”. It offers $6,000 per founder of the title, up to $18,000, and requires relocating to North Carolina. Joystick Labs will fund and mentor a project, and in return expect to get a “modest equity stake” in the company they are helping out and a “share of the money generated by the game or app” (quotes taken from the Joystick Labs FAQ as of 4:08PST 8-9-10).
