Goodbye Friends Going to Skyrim

I just wanted to take this time today to say goodbye to Wall, Daedelus, and all of my other friends who will become comatose vegetables tomorrow when Skyrim lands on shelves. I lack the necessary computer or video game console to play that drug game so I will still be around. But starting tomorrow it will be a lonely existence in a social wasteland. Within weeks the entire technical sector of the American economy will likely crash, and who knows what effects that will have on us all.

So goodbye to all my friends who will go off adventuring tomorrow, never to return again to their jobs, families, or anything that does not involve Tamriel. You will be missed.

Dear Fox (Re: Formula One),

Your broadcasts of Formula One races are lacking. You are the parent of another network (Speed) which handles these broadcasts far better than you do. Please let Speed broadcast all of the races of the season instead of choosing a few to air yourself, for the reasons listed below.

Letter to Web Developers

Dear Web Developers,

Stay the fuck out of my browser.

My straw snapped when I saw a recent project to render PDFs in a browser using JavaScript and HTML5. Oh. My. God. Because reading a PDF in one of the many existing offline readers is unthinkable.

I don’t know if it is a result of a solar flare or some other cosmological event, but something in the universe has convinced a non-trivial amount of computer programmers to treat my web browser like an application platform. Some retards want to go so far as to make it a fucking operating system.

I am supposed to believe that in the future I will be editing documents and working with spreadsheets all in my web browser, as if it were the core level of my computer? Right. Because we all know Google Docs blows Microsoft Office right out of the water.

And while you’re at it, keep patting yourselves on the back for accomplishing feats that are decades old. Cool—you wrote a ray-tracer than renders at under thirty frames per second in my browser? Thank God 1987 is back!

Ugh….

An Email About Secret Plans

The other day I tweeted that our domain registrar merged with another company, and they were polite enough to call me on the phone and tell me about it. The customer representative also wanted to let me know about some new services provided as part of the merger, which were primarily geared towards assissting web-sites that sell products. However, he had already checked out LNS and said that after reading some of our content it did not look like we were a site selling anything (he even specifically mentioned some content I wrote heh), so he was extremely polite in not pressing the issue of their new services since he could tell they weren’t really applicable to us. That type of service is one reason I have enjoyed using Register.com so much over the years.

However, today I thought I would posted an email between Wall and myself talking about something that is not a product—more of a service really—that you may see here eventually. Consider it a sneak-peak behind the closed doors of Life’s Not Simple and its shady practices and business decisions.
